3RD INTERNATIONAL FORUM ON APITHERAPY AND

2ND INTERNATIONAL FORUM ON APIQUALITY

Slovenia, September 28 – October 2, 2010

Keeping healthy through bees

Invited Speakers

will give the forum a high professional level

Beekeepers will have the unique opportunity for direct contact with international researchers and experts at an apiculture forum. The Forum will be of the highest quality, as we have invited renowned researchers and experts from around the globe. Their presentations and participation in workshops and round tables** will be completed by the best national experts, while numerous other researchers and experts from Europe and other parts of the world are expected to attend. Beekeepers will be given insight into the newest research of physical, chemical and biological characteristics of bee products, the influence of beekeeping technology on quality and development in the field of quality standards in manufacturing special bee products, especially for medicinal use. Direct insight into medicinal use of bee products and other products containing bee products is an important challenge both in directing one’s own production as well as in the utilisation of this knowledge in educating users of bee products.

The expert part of the forum will be managed by the Presidents of the Beekeeping Technology and Quality Standing Commission and the Apitherapy Commission of Apimondia. Mr. Etienne Bruneau, President of the Beekeeping Technology and Quality Standing Commission, is well known for his endeavours to improve beekeeping technology, especially by means of integrating contemporary technologies in beekeeping itself.

Dr. Stefan Bogdanov from Bulgaria
, until recently, the leading researcher of the Swiss Bee Research Centre, is a connoisseur of beekeeping practices and beekeeping technology aimed at increasing the quality of bee products. From Dr. Bogdanov, we will learn first hand about the newest findings in the development of standards of ecological beekeeping.

Professor Katrina Brodzynski from Canada conducts research into biological active matter in bee products and has focused her work on researching the biological activity of antioxidants in honey and propolis. She successfully shares her knowledge with beekeepers and the general public and tests her findings in the development of new products for the market.

Professor Vassya Bankova from Bulgaria has been successfully researching the properties of propolis for several years. Despite numerous chemical methods for determining the quality of honey, sensory evaluation holds a central role.

As a specialist from this field, Dr. Lucia Piano from Italy will lead us into the world of human comprehension of appearance, smell, aroma and taste of honey. Presentations on the quality of bee products will be completed by national researchers from the laboratory of Professor Golob at the University of Ljubljana.

The Apimedica Forum will be managed by Dr. Theodore Cherbuliez, President of the Apitherapy Commission of Apimondia. The central theme to the meetings will be the conventional use of bee venom in treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

Slovenian doctor and apitherapist, Dr. Franci Grošelj, will present the beginnings of the first modern apitherapy in the world introduced by Dr. Terč in Maribor in the beginning of the 20th century.

Contemporary use of bee venom and other bee products in treatment of multiple scleroses will be presented by the globally renowned Romanian doctor, Dr. Cristina Aosan. We expect to offer other reports on the use of bee products in treatment of neurodegenerative diseases as well.

The leading promoter of Apitherapy in the world, Dr. Stefan Stangacio from Romania, who has been actively working in Germany and who is regularly invited to various expert and scientific conferences across the globe, will help present apitherapy and the use of bee products in nutrition to both beekeepers and the general public. We will pay special attention to the increasingly recognised use of honey for wound care.

The development of products for use in wound care will be presented by British researcher, Dr. Rose Cooper, and their implementation in medical practice will be confirmed by

Malaysian researcher, Prof. Dr. Kamaruddin Bin Mohad Yusoff.

In Slovenia, intensive research in this field is conducted, ranging from thorough research to clinical studies and final medical wraps including researchers from the University of Ljubljana and the University Medical Centre.

It is important for beekeepers to learn about the broad and thorough aspect of contemporary use of bee products in order to obtain a solid guidance for future development of beekeeping production for products for special nutritional purposes or medicinal use, while at the same time, this serves as groundwork of successful education of users of bee products.

* This is a description of the role of invited speakers who have confirmed their participation at the Forum.
** A detailed programme will be announced after receiving the presentations for individual sections.
