Slovenia is proud of its unspoiled nature and the beekeepers would be glad to open their doors to participants of the Forum. Four one-day excursions are planned on the beekeeping trails.

BLED

Bled – Komenda – Breznica – Radovljica

One of the most important celebrities from this region is undoubtedly the great beekeeper of world renown, Anton Janša (1734 – 1773) from Breznica, where his restored beehive with the painted front-boards of the kranjiči (Carniolan) beehives is now located.
Excursion will start with a visit to a beekeeping master and continue in the nearby Komenda, the former parish of the great beekeeper and priest Peter Pavel Glavar.
The next stop will be the Apicultural Museum in Radovljica with over 600 uniquely painted front-boards from the kranjiči beehives. A beekeeping expert will present the rich beekeeping tradition, mead and candle-making crafts and the art of painting not to be found anywhere else in the world. The last part of this honey trip will be a visit to a workshop making delicious gingerbread products. Return to Bled.

DOLENJSKE TOPLICE

Žuniči – Adlešiči – Kartuzija Pleterje – Kostanjevica na Krki – grad Otočec

The western slopes of the Gorjanci mountain range are covered extensively with sweet chestnut trees (Castanea sativa), which are an inexhaustible source of the bitter but highly appreciated chestnut honey. Of course we also cannot neglect the hundred years of beekeeping tradition of the monks from the Pleterje Carthusian Monastery.In the nearby town of Kostanjevica na Krki, also known as the Venice of Slovenia (one of the smallest and oldest Slovenian cities, which acquired the status of a city in the 13th century), we shall visit the Forma Vivo open-air gallery. The final part of our trip will be a stroll to Otočec, the only water castle in Slovenia.

LIPICA

Lipica – Vipava – Štanjel – Kobjeglava

The Karst Region in the embrace of the Gulf of Trieste, the Vipava Valley, Brkini, Pivka and the Slovenian part of Istria is a landscape full of natural beauty, mysterious underground caves and a rich cultural heritage. Its special feature include the Lipizzaner horses and the characteristic Karst honey.
A drive to the Vipava Valley, a land of sun and wine. Our route will lead us right to the heart of the Karst region. Here, we will be welcomed by a famous beekeeper. He will reveal the specifics of the Karst honeys, which are dry, mature and rich in minerals due to the specific climatic conditions. The sweet mead served at the end of our visit will whet our appetite before lunch.

MARIBOR


The beekeepers in Maribor are famous for various beverages, such as mead, honey liqueurs and honey spirits with their latest famous product being the SPARKLING HONEY WINE. It is obtained from high quality mead by the conventional method of sparkling wine production.
A tour of Maribor, the region’s capital and the university, cultural and economic centre of the Štajerska region embedded in the wonderful surroundings of the Pohorje hills on one side and winegrowing slopes on the other, and with the Drava river diving the city in two. A walk through the picturesque centre to the oldest part of town – Lent, with the oldest vine in the world counting more than 400 years. A visit to the Maribor Beekeeping Association located next to the baroque Betnava Mansion. Here we will to learn more about apitherapy and its founder and pioneer, the Maribor doctor Filip Terč (1844 – 1917) who dedicated the greater part of his life to being a general practitioner and his free time to the bees. A tasting of bee products and, if you like, of the sparkling honey wine as well!
